It started with the Jewish New Testament. Well . . . not exactly.

While compiling a commentary on the New Testament from a Jewish perspective, Dr. David H. Stern, a Messianic Jew—a Jew who honors Yeshua (Jesus) as the Messiah of Israel—found he frequently had to retranslate certain words and phrases to capture their Jewishness. So much of this was needed that Dr. Stern set aside work on his commentary, which he had begun in 1977, to translate the New Testament. His commentary could then be completed. It was published in 1992 as the Jewish New Testament Commentary (JNTC).

The version he created differs from all other New Testaments in that it communicates the original and essential Jewishness inherent in the Gospel but missing from most English translations. He included some Hebrew words (transliterated into easy-to-read English) and Jewish concepts. Taken from the original Greek into modern English, the Jewish New Testament was introduced to the book world at the International Christian Booksellers Convention in July, 1989 in Atlanta.

Endorsed by many theologians, scholars, and religious leaders, the Jewish New Testament (JNT) has helped Christians reconnect to their Jewish roots and helped Jews recognize that Yeshua (Jesus) was/is the Messiah.
Due to a demand, initially from the Messianic Jewish community, Dr. Stern added the Old Testament to the New to create the Complete Jewish Bible (CJB) in 1998. This version restores the order of the books of the “Old” Testament to the way they were in New Testament times and presents the bible as a unified work. Millions of people have read the JNT and the CJB, which are now available in many bible software programs, in foreign languages, and also in e-book format.

As one of the foremost thinkers in the Messianic Jewish world, Dr. Stern wrote Messianic Judaism: A Modern Movement with an Ancient Past (formerly, Messianic Jewish Manifesto) to speak to issues affecting Messianic Jews and non-Jews interested in Messianic Judaism. The lengthy appendix from this book was excerpted to form Restoring the Jewishness of the Gospel: A Message for Christians. These two books, published in 1988, have greatly impacted Messianic Judaism and influenced Christianity, significantly.

We expect the Jewish New Testament to be published in Spanish by July 1, 2011. Work proceeds on the Complete Jewish Study Bible—New Testament, which should also be completed in 2011. This will include a modified Jewish New Testament text, selections from the Jewish New Testament Commentary, introductions to each New Testament book, as well as sidebars, essays, with newly created color maps. Once this has been published, we will begin work on the Complete Jewish Study Bible, which will include the entire Complete Jewish Bible with unique notes and other valuable information.
